"रोटी का एक टुकड़ा भी एहसान है"
The story of a man who feeds 55 strays and goes hungry himself
Animals cannot speak. They cannot describe their pain, their fear, or their hunger in words. But anyone who has looked into their eyes knows that the question is always the same: will someone come for me today?
In a quiet lane in Raipur, one man feeds 55 animals every single day. Twenty-five to thirty of them are large street dogs, the rest are puppies and other strays who have nowhere else to go. There is no shelter, no funding, no team behind him. Just one man, and a responsibility he never asked for but never walked away from.
"We feel hunger, and we can ask for food with our mouths. Who will they ask?" he says. Most days, he does not have enough to feed everyone properly. Two kilos of rice stretched with five to six litres of water, turned into something close to soup, is what he offers these animals to survive on.
When love comes at a personal cost
This work has given him purpose, but it has also taken almost everything else away. His own family left him because of it. Neighbours abuse him, sometimes even hit him. His electricity has been cut off. He is constantly harassed over money he does not have.
"Tell me sir, should I protect them, or should I protect myself?" he asks himself this question every single day. And every single day, the answer remains the same: them.
His greatest fear is not what might happen to him. It is what will happen to these 55 animals if he is no longer there to stand between them and the world. "I am afraid that one day, these poor souls will be killed, and because of them, I will be killed too."
A hope for one permanent home
His one request is simple: a place where these animals can finally be safe. Some support, so the daily battle against hunger becomes a little easier to fight. "I would rather stay hungry myself, sir, but I cannot let them stay hungry."
This is not the story of an organisation. It is the story of one man who picked up a responsibility that belonged to no one, and refused to put it down. All he is asking for is one hand to hold his.
